Happy Thanksgiving!

Thursday, November 28, 2013

My lovelies, happy, happy Thanksgiving! This afternoon we are meeting a whole bunch of friends for a huge Thanksgiving feast and afterwards everyone is coming over to our place for drinks, wine and pie. And since tomorrow it's Balazs 39th birthday, we are planning to make it into a whole weekend of playing board games, listening to Miles Davis, watching a few classic films, drinking cocktails with those ice cubes and eat, eat, eat ourselves silly!

If you are in a post-reading-type-of-mood in the next few days, please feel free to browse through exPress-o! Here are a few scrumptious ideas including those festive spoons, the 'it' panini for Friday (we can't wait to make it again this year), some pie goodness and if you feel a bit chilly, this hot chocolate with wine will make you feel all warm and happy in no time. Promise! Also, for those who like their wine cold, here are 2 last minute wine chilling tricks and a nifty tip on saving leftover wine. Next week I'll continue with our gift guides and I am so pleased that you're enjoying them so far. Also, don't miss our beautiful Keecie GIVEAWAY!

Christmas Gift Guide 2013: *Part Four* For Avocado Lovers

Say avocado, avocado, avocado three times - are you smiling? Yup, they somehow magically make everything better. Like chocolate or pickles, they are incredibly addictive but much healthier. A few weeks ago I read that statistics show that every single person in today’s world probably knows someone who is utterly smitten with avocados. If that is true those 10 nifty little avocado gadgets will make Christmas shopping easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy for us all. Right?

So without further ado, here are 10 gift ideas for those moms who make avocado hair-masks from scratch; husbands who eat avocado toasts like it's their job; sisters who will take 2 different subways just to pick up the freshest avocados in town for dinner - and yourself, the nut who can't get enough of this pear-shaped green goodness. Le sigh! Here we go:

1. Fresh pod avocado keeper, ($7.39) - because sometimes a whole avocado it too much for one little person:) This way she can store it for later.

2. Beeswaxed organic muslin food wrap, ($17.95) - for the mom or sister who loves all things organic, reusable and anti-bacterial. Plus it will keep your avocado wonderfully fresh till dinner.

3. Avocado hand therapy cream, ($8 - $20) -  for the best friend who loves the smell of avocados and always complains that her hands are way too dry. This baby will do the trick!

4. Absolutely Avocados cookbook, ($15.39) - this gem will make any avocado fan freak out. It's that amazing! Plus, you can always be sure that an avocado dish will be served on the next dinner party:)

5. 3 in 1 avocado slicer tool, ($9.95) - it's magical and super nifty. What else would he want?

6. Avocado and olive oil triple milled soap, ($15) - to make her feel special during those early morning showers. The scent is incredibly stunning!

7. Avocado salt & pepper shakers, ($45) - because salt always tastes better from avocado-shaped shaker:)

8. Avocado apron, ($37.95) - to show the love.

9. Guacamole recipe print, ($30) - A stunning watercolour that will brighten her kitchen. Plus, guacamole is her favourite dip anyway:)

10. Fresh California avocado basket ($27.95 - $124.95) - so you can make him his favourite avocado toast with salt and olive oil every single day from now on.

Lovelies, what caught your eye? Do you like avocados? xo

P.S: Also, here are six 2010 gift guides,  five 2011 gift guides, seven 2012 gift guides and this year's gift guides so far.
P.P.S: Plus, my favourite rucola and avocado pesto and those yummy roasted wedges:)

Sleeping on Strangers on the Subway

Back in the day when Balazs and I used to be in a long distance relationship, I spent countless hours on planes and cabs. We used to fly to each other or meet somewhere half way just for a bit, a little time to have a dinner or a chat that didn’t involve holding a phone :)

Anyway, during that time I had a routine of catching up on my sleep during the flights and on countless occasions I might have snuggled unknowingly to a passenger or few next to me. Most of them didn’t mind or weren’t bothered I guess, since they never said anything. So when I spotted this video my heart melted. On October 21st this year a photo of a guy named Isaac went viral after he allowed a stranger to sleep on his shoulder for over half an hour. After spotting it, Charidy decided to see how many people would let a random person sleep on them. Here are the results, and the valuable lesson they learned. So if you have 2 minutes and 18 seconds to spare this morning, watch it! It will make you smile.

Psst: Would you let a stranger to sleep on you on the subway? Has anything like that ever happened to you?

P.S: On love.
P.P.S: Also, do you remember this sweet lesson on patience?

(Thanks Thelma)

exPress-o Film Club: Admission

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

Lovelies, have you seen Admission? What did you think? It’s a heart-warming comedy/drama with the ever amazing Tina Fey. It’s a story of second chances, change, hope, realization and happy ever after. It’s funny because I wasn’t sure if Tina can pull off a more serious role of a prestigious University admission officer who looks very put together on the surface but she’s incredibly vulnerable underneath - but despite my initial doubts, she nailed it! Also, the chemistry between her and Paul Rudd is full of fireworks. It’s one of those films I will surely re-watch over and over again. So if you are in the mood for some easy yet sweet watch that will make you rethink what’s really important in life, this film is totally for you:)

Bits and bobs:
- Paul Weitz directed this film and he also directed In Good Company and About a Boy.
- Yikey, awkward kissing - so hilarious:)
- Tina and Paul dish on Admission - so funny!
- Tina's newest hobby.
- Tina and Paul unscripted - oh yes!
- Here are 30 things you didn't know about Tina Fey.
- Paul Rudd prepping for Anchorman and some sexy talk:)
- Paul on Tina.
- A very sweet and so funny little video of Amy Poehler honoring Tina.
- Tina and the 2013 Golden Globes - genius!
- One of my favourite films with Paul was Anchorman and I can't wait for the new one. You?
- Do you remember him in Clueless?
- There is also Wallace Shawn, Michael Sheen and Lily Tomlin.
- A few of my favourite films with Tina are Baby Mama and Date Night (I've seen that one over 5 times already).
- Fancy knowing what Tina was doing at 25?
- Giggle!
- Paul on who and what makes him laugh + tons more.

P.S: And a few other films that rock my world right now.

Festive Fun With Bobby Pins

Last Wednesday I treated myself to a haircut and a scalp massage after months of growing out my bangs. It’s officially gone for now but I am positive, I will change my mind by next spring. Anyway, my hair is a lot shorter, but still considerably long, so I can play with different hairdos. I usually like unfussy solutions, so when I spotted this little triangle ‘do’ made totally out of simple bobby pins, I was sold and I wore it like it’s my job for most of last week. I even got a few compliments while out and about from total strangers. I also tried the 2 x-s' and tomorrow I am planning to ask my friend Sofia to help me make the chevron pattern for my low French bun as we are going for a pre-Thanksgiving dinner party to Balazs' work-friend. Ah, bobby pins, you are so darn awesome:) Would you try any of the bobby pins dos above?

P.S: Here are a few others you might like (the star tickles my fancy).
P.P.S: And more hair goodness including this messy French twist that I am planning to wear on Thursday:)

Are You Afraid To Fail?

The thing about us adults is that we are scared of failure. Kids just go for things with no fear whatsoever. If they don’t succeed, it’s really not a big deal to them. They just keep on trying. Remember those times? But when the teenage years hit, we get self-conscious, afraid to look unsure or uncool. And that’s when we stop trying as much, become more careful and more set in our ways. By the time we’re full-fledged adults, the word “new” can sound as scary as “defeat,” so we play it safe and stick to what we know instead of just breaking free like kids do. You know what they say, right? Kids truly hold the essence of life.

Well, this video will not only make your Monday morning wonderfully smiley but it will also prove that the statement above is true. Unstuck asked a bunch of kiddos a few questions about failing, like if they were afraid of it, what it means to fail and how to just go for it. It’s incredible how smart, factual and truthful they were. What are we so afraid of? I have no clue but I know one thing, next time I am faced even with the smallest challenge, I will take in on like the little boy in the grey tee and shake off that excessive worry and go for it like back in the day on that playground swing:)

P.S: I forgot my phone.
P.P.S: A sassy GIVEAWAY is coming up!
