Bedroom White

Thursday, July 31, 2014

What is your favourite bed sheets/bedding colour? Mine is crisp white that has been washed with a dash of eucalyptus essential oil. Years ago, my mom told me that people who have hard time sleeping should keep their bedroom cool, neutral and sleep on white bed sheets. I'm not sure how scientific that actually is, but it has been my go-to formula for the longest time. It also helps that in our mind white sheets emanate freshness and crispness and no matter how dark the room is, it always makes it look so much more inviting and fresh. Don't you think? xo

P.S: Family coziness :)
P.P.S: Magical dreams.

Quick Pickled Spring Onions

Have you ever had pickled spring onions? Confession: I love all things pickled from the obvious pickles, cauliflower, peppers, beets, tomatoes to even grapes and of course onions. Weirdly, I always had this idea that pickling veggies can get very messy and time taking, but Nikole convinced me otherwise. So a few weeks ago I used her super quick recipe and by the next morning I had a few jars of pickled spring onions ready to be eaten with sandwiches and salads. So good! xo

P.S: I'm craving this right now. You?
P.P.S: Mmm, roasted avocado wedges :)

Two Bobby Pin Summer Updo

Wednesday, July 30, 2014

Speaking of all things sassy, how summer perfect is this understated little updo? Best part: it takes no effort to create, it only requires 2 bobby pins and it will survive the whole day! I'm actually wearing it since the morning and I'm amazed how well it (still) holds and how sassy it looks.

Btw, here is a fun little trick I just learned to make sure that those bobby pins will stay in place: spray them with a bit of dry shampoo (or hairspray) before putting them in. Try it, it works perfectly! (Here is the step-by-step-how-to). xo

P.S: I'm still swooning over this do!
P.P.S: Plus, tons more hair goodness for you to check out.

Red Sunnies: Thumbs up or down?

What do you think about red sunnies? I find them super jazzy, fun and pretty sassy, actually. I'm not sure if I could pull them off myself, but whenever I see a girl strolling on the street wearing them, I can't help but smile! They add a great pop of colour:) My friend Sofia has a theory that they are summer's red lipstick substitute. She might be right about that. Thumbs up or down? xo

P.S: Red duo...

Where would you go?

Let's play a game this morning! Quick, if you could fly anywhere in the world today, where would you go? Just off top of your head, the first place that pops to your mind...

Last night, Balazs and I realized that exactly a year ago we were in Malta, so to make ourselves feel better for not traveling this summer, we spent the night sipping wine and playing this daydreaming game that put a big smile on both our faces.

Balazs chose Tenerife for it's laid back vibe where he could just sip cocktails, eat fresh fish by the beach and chill all day long. I picked Bali because ever since Jodi's trip there, I've been enchanted by its quiet and peaceful rice paddies, vibrant colours and the pure isolation that it gives. To me it seems like a place where my mind could disconnect and unwind.

What's your pick? xo

P.S: How about this spot?
P.P.S: Plus, a few other places that will make you swoon!

exPress-o Film Club: The Monuments Men

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

The other night Balazs and I watched The Monuments Men. Have you seen it already? It's a 2014 drama with some totally endearing comedic moments, played by a stellar cast of George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray and Cate Blanchett, among others.

It's a true story of  an officer and art historian who leads a team of fellow art experts in pursuit of art treasures looted by the Nazis and returning them back to their rightful owners. The only problem is that as much as they love and know art, they are pretty clueless when it comes to war. So their sometimes great plans, result in mischief, a bit of heartache, a few laugh-out-loud moments and a dash of pure panic. It's one of those films that doesn't feel like a war story, it feels like a movie about the love for art, the adoration of beauty and a start of a great friendship. A must see!
Bits and bobs:
- George Clooney directed, co-wrote and starred in the film.
- George on films and shoes.
- The whole cast on Jimmy Kimmel.
- Giggle, George back in the day - 1985!
- More on the film...
- I loved Matt Damon in The Bourne Identity.
- George Clooney's prank on Matt - giggle!
- Hahah...still makes me laugh.
- Whenever I think of Bill Murray, what pops into my mind is Lost in Translation and Groundhog Day. You?
- Bill's bucket list :)
- Did you know that Bill was on the first ever episode of Late Show with David Letterman in 1982? (The year I was born).
- The other film I loved with Cate Blanchett was Blue Jasmine. She was amazing in it!
- Love!
- Remember John Goodman in Roseanne? Or Bob Balaban in Moonrise Kingdom? (One of my all time favourite films).

P.S: Plus this one and this one is pretty awesome too:)
P.S: Plus, a few other films that you might be in the mood for.

The secret to a stellar grilled cheese sandwich

How does ooey-gooey grilled cheese sandwich sound for dinner tonight? Recently I read that Gabriella Hamilton of NYC’s East Village Prune Restaurant finally spilled the beans on what it takes to make a stellar grilled cheese sandwich and I couldn't be more excited about it!

So if you fancy a secret to crispier, faster, better grilled cheese sandwiches, here it is: use mayonnaise instead of butter! It's that simple.

Gabriella swears by it and says it won't burn as quickly as butter, it won't stick to the pan, and it browns and crisps more evenly too. Plus it adds that wonderful richness that we all long for in a grilled cheese sandwich. You just need a few slices of rustic bread, mayonnaise and some shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese - that is all! (Full recipe here).

Can't wait for dinner tonight, you? xo

Botanical Space Flight

I’m totally flabbergasted just looking at those images, you? I always knew that space is pretty amazing to look at but who could expect that a bouquet of flowers and a 50-year-old bonsai tree can make space look even more amazing?

Yup, a Tokyo based artist, Azuma Makoto sent those beautiful plants up in the space (approximately 90,000 feet in the air) and documented their journey with the help of six Go Pros and two GPS tracking devices. Azuma Makoto’s dream was to travel to space and his wish finally came true through his art. How awesome is that? xo

P.S: You can see the full process here.

Dipping Toes...

Monday, July 28, 2014

Weeks ago I asked my friend Abby what does she wanted to do on the morning of her wedding. I wanted to make sure that these usually nerve-wracking and stressful few hours will be spent in enjoyment. I suggested a lazy breakfast on the balcony of the cottage we all stayed in, but she said that she wanted to spend it by the water. So on Saturday morning we walked down the little path where our rented cottage was and we just stood in the water, sipped our coffee, enjoyed the view of the trees all around and laughed about all the little mishaps that might or might not happen before the ceremony. That little moment made me realize how strong bond we actually have and how something so simple as feeling the cool water dance between your toes can relax, unwind and calm down your soul. Hands down this was my favourite moment of the wedding weekend.

How would you spend the morning before your wedding or how did you? xo

P.S: Four-legged wedding guests.

Style Tweaks: Knotted Tee.

My whole style motto is based on keeping it simple, minimal and comfortable while jazzing it up with little tweaks that make the whole outfit come together in that understated-sassy-type-of-way. One of my favourite summer tweaks is knotting my white cotton tees - the 90s staple! I love how a little knot on the side, in the middle or even on the back of the t-shirt can transform it into this snazzy little top that goes flawlessly with midi skirts, jeans, shorts and even suit pants. Try it, you won't believe how much it will transform your everyday look. Thoughts? xo

P.S: Sprezzatura state of style.
P.P.S: Top-knot = love!

Fresh Flower Paper Bag Bouquets

Nothing brings a big smile like receiving flowers for no particular reason, wouldn't you say so? You know what’s even better? If the bouquet is already placed in a jar filled with water and a simple paper bag. This way there is no fuss of looking for a vase that will be big or small enough to hold all the flowers, so you can just sit your bouquet somewhere beautiful in your flat and enjoy its summer scent!

The other week when I was going over to a friend for lunch, I got a bunch of inexpensive supermarket flowers and put them in a bigger Mason jar and a paper bag and tied the top with a simple twine – that is it! It looked so pretty! What do you think? xo

P.S: Hope everyone had a great weekend!
